It’s All an Illusion Anyway

For this project, Charlie Allen was highly inspired by the juxtaposition of society. In this the notion that our own experiences are completely individual and what we believe to be true, is just our own version. Reality is faceless and all the rules of the world are entirely made up. From this, Allen looked to the past particularly into ancient Greek mythology; including the stories of Medusa and Persephone. Looking into these women’s stories for their power, strength and contrasts, only highlights further the differentiating discriminations they faced. Furthermore, this inspired Allen’s silhouettes to create an illusion of drapery similar to marble statues from the renaissance times.

The collection is a celebration of the female form; to embrace the natural figure as an art piece rather than something to be hidden away. Allen’s intentions for the use of mesh are to do just this – to celebrate strong and confident women. The pink feminine print creates an illusion that is metaphorical for our society, and the idea that our reality is never ending and constantly developing.
