Our Lasses

Inspired by Sheffield’s famous ‘Buffer Girls’ – the strong, working-class women of the early 20th century who polished the cutlery in steel city’s workshops – Alicia Tilney’s Our Lasses is an autumn/winter collection, blending the Buffer uniform with oversized characteristics to emphasis the strength and character of the women I researched, who were standing out in a “man’s world”.

Tilney’s work draws on her passion for history – and the links to her own experience – her Great Grandmother Alice was a Buffer Girl:

“I enjoy seeing how fashion has evolved and adapted over time. I particularly like finding a link between the past and present, finding subjects that are still relevant today”.

Her design process uses this research to develop strong silhouettes before adding detailing.

She established her own brand, Seven By Five, during her industry placement year, creating ethical, sustainable fashion brand designed and handmade in Sheffield. She was a finalist for the Hallam Enterprise Awards 2019.

As well as fashion design she is interested in costume design, curation and conservation.
