Amelia Ward’s graduate collection The Fight draws on the struggle for equality throughout history – the suffragettes, Black Panthers, disability and gay rights movements, and the events that marked these moments of change – from the death of Emily Davison at the Epsom races in 1913, to the Stonewall riots of 1969. For Ward, “every battle these individuals faced during their fight for equality made them stronger and more determined”.

Ward’s eclectic style combines overtly masculine shapes with the extreme femininity of flowing dresses. Techniques like knitting, embroidery, print, colour blocking, smocking and gathering as well as her use of colour give a strong structure and shape to her collection.

During her degree, Ward’s industry experience was hugely important. At Mackintosh she learnt to grade, digitise, and create spec sheets, and the classic brand inspired the outerwear coats and jackets which can be seen in her collection. The theatricality of her garments meanwhile has been developed by her work as a wardrobe assistant at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.
