Mortar You Brooch

Drawing inspiration from architecture and liminal spaces, Hanna Spellacy explores how composition and sculpture can be put into context with the body. What pulls us into these spaces? Why are we drawn to certain structures? These are questions that arise from her photographic research that aim to capture the melancholy atmosphere of these derelict locations.

Questioning what ‘value’ is within the jewellery world through her material choice, Spellacy experiments with found objects, industrial materials, and waste to communicate the narrative being portrayed through her work. Her approach to design holds a strong emphasis on graphic structures that reflect the paintings inspired by Constructivist art produced within her research. This location-based narrative is enhanced by the use of photo etching techniques, keeping the presence of these environments at the forefront of her designs. The imagery is complemented by textures of old metals and subtle patina finishes, contrasting with various brushed polishes. This subconscious acceptability towards old materials has opened a forward-thinking attitude to reusability and use of waste materials within her jewellery design.
