Impressions of the Matter – a new international live creative brief developed with Sheffield Museums, the Guild of St George, and Future Now at Sheffield Hallam University.
This public facing brief invites students, artists, communities, and observational scientists to respond to Storm-Cloud, a contemporary performance lecture inspired by Ruskin’s 1884 text, The Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century. The work turns attention to weather, climate, and the stories we attach to both.
Selected responses, which could take any form – from drawing, photography, sculpture, and animation, to poetry, film, climate science, data visualisation, or immersive performance – will be shared online as part of the Storm-Cloud archive, and as part of a new motion design created and curated by SCII colleague Jake Goodall for the upcoming Storm-Cloud exhibition in the Ruskin Collection at Sheffield Museums throughout 2026.
If you, your students, or your research colleagues are interested in taking part, or if you’d like to discuss embedding the brief in teaching, please directly contact Tom Payne: t.s.payne@shu.ac.uk
