These interactive narratives have been created as part of the third-year BA (Hons.) Creative Writing module ‘Games Narratives’. On this module, students explored diverse forms of interactivity by looking at a variety of genres. These ranged from collaboratively told table-top-RPG’s, to hyper-text narratives with branching narratives, and narrative-focussed video games that play with the role and function of the narrator.
Throughout this process students considered how the rules, mechanics, environments, and form of interactivity they encountered interlinked with the themes explored in each narrative. They then created their own work of digital fiction or narrative game.
In each of these works, students have thought carefully about the ways in which they are inviting others to ‘play’ their narratives, how players/readers can become invested in the choices, characters, and narrative arcs that they have created.
Most of these narratives are fully playable online. Others require time and more than one player to be fully experienced. In this case writers have provided an example ‘playthrough’ for participants.
