A Home From Home

Taylor Williams’ multidisciplinary practice: photographs/photoshop, creative writing, and mixed media interactivity pieces are bright and present the feeling of nostalgia within the home. All of it is inspired by his Nannan, Pamela Hickin. The contrast of colours, and black and white, in Williams’ pieces represent the theme of the homely and the “unhomeliness”. Williams’s use of primary research in his practice with surveys broadens the exploration and this gap allows a want to explore what other people see as the home and as “unhomely.” The feeling of joy in the home is a theme that drives the methods and choices used to incorporate photography in his practice.

Williams is a very unusual artist with a unique practice. This can be recognised by his use of play doh and wool in his mixed media pieces, which have allowed the space for nostalgia to be further tapped into. The use of wool is to symbolise the home comforts that drives his work, while the use of play doh is to tap into the nostalgia, bringing back a sense of childhood with the smell being a trigger for lost memories in the home. The authenticity of the way Williams adds an element of the place he feels most at home to his pieces can remind us of these recurring themes when viewing his work. It also allows a space for the viewer to intrude into this space or feel comfortable while present. Taylor Williams found a new love for creative writing, and this has become a strong point for his practice as he feels that alongside his pieces, he wants to present creative writing to add an extra dimension.

THERE’S A SOFT WORLD JUST UNDER THE SURFACE OF THIS ONE. YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING PULLED TAUGHT OVER IT. I CAN FEEL ITS TEXTURE WHEN YOU HOLD MY HAND. WHEN WE TOUCH IT, NOTHING WILL BE THE SAME EVER AGAIN.
