In Help Needed to Redo Time (to Morning), Jim Ever explores themes of dementia, memory loss, and decline through the use of obsolete and malfunctioning technology. The work centres on a sound piece featuring worn cassette recordings of spoken word, singing, and piano performed by the artist’s grandmother, who later developed Alzheimer’s disease. These recordings are layered with tape loops, field recordings, and experimental sound textures, amplified through transducers bolted to an upright piano soundboard. The installation also includes low-resolution camcorder footage and an image created with photocopier techniques, using material from a family photo album, drawing a poignant connection between technological breakdown and the fragility of memory.
