Drawing inspiration from traditional illuminated scriptures like the Book of Kells, as well as from comics and the interplay of legacy within artistic communities, the piece “I Would Love You in Every Universe” is rooted in Joshua Lawrence’s personal experiences in a queer, homosexual relationship. It seeks to delve into the narrative of two beings, separated by time and existing in different realities. Central to the project is the notion that true love transcends all barriers, with the belief that pure love will always triumph regardless of distance or space between individuals.
With the goal of elevating comics and narrative-based media to a “higher” contemporary art form, the piece is crafted from eight meters of canvas with inserted eyelets, allowing it to be displayed either as a scroll reminiscent of traditional scriptures or bound together to form a comic, reflecting its initial inspirations. Positioned on a two-meter by two-meter pink plinth, the artwork aims to command attention within its space while staying true to its original sources of inspiration. Through its presence, the piece prompts questions about what belongs in contemporary gallery spaces and how objects and media are perceived and treated within them.
