For this project, Lauren Bates has created a multi-canvas artwork that delves into the concept of ‘sonder.’ This work is composed of five distinct canvases, intentionally fragmented to reflect distance. The central focus is the subject, an indistinct figure obscured by a hazy complexion which determines the elusive nature of human experience.
Bates uses a muted palette of cool greys, soft blues, and subtle burgundies to cultivate an atmosphere of stillness and emotional distance. The subdued tones and gentle brushwork position the viewer as an observer witnessing a moment without full comprehension. This technique mirrors the transient, often unclear ways we encounter others, where we glimpse fragments of their lives but never fully understand their depths.
Through this piece, Bates invites reflection on the often unnoticed inner worlds we pass by daily, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the fleeting yet profound moments of connection and disconnection that shape our interactions. The work is a meditation on the quiet spaces between people, the beauty found in what is unseen and only partially understood. By capturing the subtle complexity of ‘sonder,’ Bates creates a contemplative space for viewers to explore the beauty and mystery of the human experience.
