Inspired by the interconnectedness of fantasy and history, Charlotte Jones touches on themes of women and femininity in fantasy, stereotypes, subverting gender conventions and androgyny. The project brings to life and encapsulates the important and iconic aspects of Jeanne d’Arc, one of the greatest female figures in medieval history. The warrior women of the medieval period have been honoured throughout the project and reimagined in 2D and 3D media, the key focus of these specific artworks is the historical accounts, and in the case of Jeanne, the physical descriptions which differ from most modern interpretations of the heroine.
Charlotte is passionate about the use of cardboard as a creative medium and works exclusively with it, so the sculptures in the installation are made entirely of cardboard and left mostly unpainted to showcase the raw material. The rough cardboard is paired with rich coloured blue velvet, referencing the French heritage of both the artist and the subject. Additionally, ‘Quelque(s) chose(s) de Jeanne d’Arc’ is a French play on words; pieces of her, and something about her.
The aim is to empower and bring attention to the character of Jeanne with an ‘unusual medium’, as she is inspirational and belongs among other strong female characters that are sometimes overlooked in the history books.
