I am interested in how our anthropocentric worldview has impacted ecology and biodiversity; and how human relationships to animals are reflected in and shaped by representations of animals in media, culture, language and domestic items. We encounter representations and references to animals much more often than we encounter real animals themselves. This can lead to a perceived closeness to wildlife. One that allows for ambivalence towards the catastrophic threat that real wildlife is under due to pollution, habitat loss, climate change and hunting. My aim for this work is to create an opportunity for people to question their relationship to the animals that surround them. By presenting people with depictions of animals, particularly ones that may be considered mundane or pests, in an unexpected manner; I hope to invigorate the way they think about these animals. I am choosing to honour wildlife that is often overlooked, with the aim to highlight the importance of variety for the health of ecosystems. Focusing on native UK wildlife as I want to inspire curiosity about the animals we share a home with.
