The propagation of light refers to the manner in which an electromagnetic wave transfers its energy from one point to another. If emotion is regarded as a kind of energy, can the propagation of light also be seen as a new way of expressing emotion?
Mingyu Shan’s undergraduate collection explores how light propagation can be used as a medium for expressing emotion in contemporary jewellery. The collection proposes different ways of projecting, reflecting and refracting light, using mirrors, prisms and creating shadows as a design medium. Each piece of work is given a positive back story, in the hope that the jewellery can cause an emotional response in the people who wear and view it, helping them to love life more and treat each day positively. Mingyu believes that jewellery not only beautifies the body, but also enriches the human spirit.
