Li Simeng’s work encapsulates the idea of ‘a sense of security’ in four pieces of contemporary wearable jewellery. The first element of ‘A Sense of Security’ is a ring in the form of a silver rectangular box which contains a selection of silver spikes that can be used as a defensive weapon. This addresses the first form of security- security of the individual from everyone else.
The second and third elements interact together, inspired by shared lockets coming together to reveal a secret. The second work is presented in gold with positive messages inscribed on the outer surface. In contrast, the third piece has a black surface with negatively associated words inscribed on the inner surface. These two pieces represent the importance of relationships and emotional support are for our own sense of place and security.
The fourth work is a locket containing two further pieces of jewellery which are to be given to whomever the wearer wishes. This represents what Simeng deems the highest state of security- the position to bestow a feeling of security upon others.
