As an artist Xie Meiye is concerned about the effect of social media on narcissistic tendencies within the population. Through their works, they discuss issues of self-love and the dangers of a narcissistic culture within the public. They begin their process through researching and reading about the topic and then selecting particular visual elements within the studied texts.
The body of work submitted contains two visual elements: ‘Breast brooch’ and ‘Halo chains’. Breasts are a symbol of privacy and this work challenges whether people undermine their privacy in order to gain attention through social media.
A halo, meanwhile, belongs to a saint or an angel. This work suggests a different way of wearing jewellery, carried permanently above one’s own head. But is it appropriate for us to claim a halo for ourselves? Xie’s artworks ask questions, not only for the artist, but the wearers and viewers of the jewellery- is there something bigger than the self in the age of narcissism?
