For artist Yihan Chen, makeup is the most basic element towards their outward appearance. Due to a strong personal identity through makeup and clothing Chen has often received negative remarks and associations having many experiences where phrases such as ‘men will not be attracted to women like you’. 

As a protest and resistance to these remarks Chen created her work by casting parts of her face and mouth with plaster, painting exaggerated makeup on them to demonstrate the power of free will and personal identity. 

This society discriminates deeply against women: how dare men feel that they can then judge what colour lipstick a woman puts on her mouth.
