Bauhausbücher 15 is a hardback book based on the Bauhausbücher 1 – 14 publications produced between 1926 and 1929, and acts as the next instalment in the series, created to celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Bauhaus college of design in Dessau in 1926. It also functions as a type specimen for neubau, showcasing all four weights throughout.
Neubau is a contemporary reinterpretation of Herbert Bayer’s Bauhaus type experiment, Universal. Bayer’s work resulted in a set of lowercase glyphs which, unfortunately, never became commercially available… I decided to change that.
Now featuring four weights, as well as capital and mathematical glyphs, neubau brings Bayer’s work back to life for the 21st-century graphic designer and typographer. It was designed and programmed in Glyphs 3 and is available as a fully downloadable open typeface.
The book consists of four sections exploring the history of the Bauhaus movement, the Dessau campus, Bayer’s Universal typeface and, finally, the type specimen for neubau.
It is a handmade, perfect-bound, screen-printed cloth hardback book, presented with a screen-printed Perspex sheet in homage to the shadow photography of Bauhaus master László Moholy-Nagy and his cover of Bauhausbücher 14.
