Yusi Wang’s grandmother is the inspiration for this collection of contemporary jewellery: “My grandmother had a knack for ingeniously crafting small wallets from old, unwearable socks. Each wallet appeared worn and marked by signs of wear and tear, yet my grandmother insisted that they were durable and convenient. I felt embarrassed to showcase these wallets filled with money because they were not aesthetically pleasing and could even invite ridicule. Consequently, I would discreetly feel around in my pocket and covertly retrieve money to avoid drawing attention.
However, it was through my grandmother’s skilful transformation of these wallets made from old socks that they ceased to be mere receptacles for money and became symbols of how any inconspicuous material or object in life could have extraordinary utility. With a pure and unconscious heart, my grandmother engaged in a fascinating creative process.”
