How can we safeguard ourselves and feel secure? What are the limits of self-protection?
Wenqing Fan’s jewellery explores self-protection by examining the relationship between individual identity and symbolism. The snake serves as a protection symbol throughout, regarded as a benevolent protector and healer in both prehistoric Chinese and Greek societies. Additionally, the snake itself is very well-defended. For instance, its flexible bone structure can stretch and twist, its scales protect its body, and the fork in its tongue offers a sense of directional scent and taste, to name a few. It may also spew poison when swallowed or bitten.
