The Man from Nowhere is a project by Bwe Soe exploring the history of her people, the Karen, their struggles, and the world that she envisions them having, a world full of peace and prosperity.
Soe’s project reimagines the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as the guardians of the Karen people. The Four Horsemen are four different beings sent by God himself to punish wrongdoers, but for Soe this becomes a protective gesture. For Soe, each horseman has an individual identity and character, explored through her collection: the White Horse, who is deemed to be the prince; Christ Himself – the Red Horse – seen to represent war; The Black Horse, who represents famine; the final horseman, the Pale Horse, is seen as death himself.
