Tipping the Balance

Xiaoron Ma’s work focuses on the ideology that the value of jewellery is determined not only by its materials, but also the stories and emotions behind the piece, and the value it brings to the individual and society. During their MA project, Ma uses jewellery as an instrument to represent the imbalance of power in the context of marriage in Chinese culture. Ma is inspired by her parents’ divorce combined with people’s attitudes about marriage and social phenomena across China.

Ma’s works are presented in four different elements, made using various different materials such as resin, ceramic and plated metals. Using materials such as feathers and stones to represent the imbalance, Ma lets gravity do the work of symbolising power.
