Bygones – The History of Two Cultures

“Can fusion jewellery effectively express the history, beauty and dichotomies of Indian and British culture”

Bhakti Maru has explored the interface between British and Indian culture through her jewellery. Through which she reflects on the impact of colonialism on her home country as well as the positive aspects of the relationship the continues many years after the end of British rule. She says “During the British colonisation in India, we lost a part of our heritage, martyrs who gave their lives for our country. However, we were also left with so many other beautiful things behind which we still and will forever cherish. It has been 73 years since India got free from the British colonization and we have incorporated so many of their part of the culture within us and vice versa.” In developing a nuanced understanding she is able to find the “positive in the negative”, something that has been particularly relevant during the Covod-19 pandemic.
