This reminds Chen of her student days, when heavy textbooks and lots of exam papers were printed with dense questions and dazzling text. The whiteness of the paper and the blackness of the text was numbing and tiresome. It is this remembered impression that inspires the overall colour palette of black and white and the dazzling style of the shapes in the work.

The stage of ‘life’ is without a director who requires us to perform our roles perfectly. We constantly change our roles in response to environment and location changes. For example, Xinyi Chen changes based on her role in life as a student, or as a daughter, as a friend, as a partner, as a female, as a consumer, as a young person. Over a lifetime of switching between different roles, Chen is constantly becoming ‘her true self’. In modern society, everyone plays a different role and switches randomly and at any time every day. Everyone has multiple roles to play, and each role has a different task to shoulder. Everyone also shows his own unique sense of value in the society. At the same time, it is important to distinguish between an individual’s role in a relationship and one’s definition of self. In life, we are often labeled by people. For example, if you work as a teacher, then when people refer to you, they will often add a nickname about your profession, such as Professor Yang. Or if you introduce yourself, you might say you’re a professor. In this case, labels can make us forget about who we are and lose the uniqueness of our personality.
