My Family Tree

A visualization of her own family memories has given Charlotte Baker the chance to examine her own recollections as well as learning more about her family.

My Family Tree is one of four outcomes for her project Visualising Memory, all of which look into different areas of memory. In each piece, she used her own research into memory to learn more about her own.

“I want people to think about their own memories when they view my work. The use of rope allows my ideas to be subtle so that the audience can interpret each piece the way they want to. The rope is what shows my memory but only I can fully understand the pieces, so I hope that when people see my work, they reflect on their own memory in some way”.

Baker’s practice is process driven, which allows her to learn and develop her own thoughts and opinions on the topics she explores

“I want the people who see my work to be able to have the same opportunity and not have any specific idea forced onto them through the design, but instead be able to interpret my work in their own way”.

She is currently working towards her MA in Design.

The Corruption of Natural Structures - Charlotte Baker - CHARLOTTE BAKER
Graphite, tacks, twine, 2020, 90cm x 60cm "This series is made up of two pieces, which look into corruption and how I think my own memory has been corrupted. Both pieces use natural structures, branches, and rope to portray the corruption. Our brains are natural structures and everyone’s is unique to them".
Knotted Memories
Graphite, tacks, twine, 2020, 90cm x 60cm "This piece highlights the frustration and confusion I felt whist trying to recall memories from childhood photographs. The thickness of the rope represents how well I remembered the memory, the thicker the rope the more I could remember, the number of knots within it represents what I can pick out from the images, such as people or the place, and the tightness of the rope shows my frustration, the looser the knot, the less frustrated I was".
1999 - 2020
Graphite, tacks, twine, 2020, each piece 60cm x 60cm "A series of 3 exhibition pieces, all showing my memory of the world events that have occurred in my lifetime. They highlight my memory as well as the process of how I used the rope to visualise memory".
