Inspired by their grandmother’s story as a victim of foot binding, Ruimeng Wu, uses the history of foot-binding and Nüshu (a written script used exclusively by women in Jiangyong County, China up to the 20th century) in ancient China, to explore the constraints women were subjected to and their quest for freedom, equality and identity. Wu’s jewellery uses elements of Nüshu to convey the unity and strength between women on the journey from bondage to liberation. Wu says: “Each piece of jewellery is a symbol that bears witness to women’s power of resistance and self-identity. Through this series, I hope to cause the audience to think about women’s history and inspire the desire for equality and freedom. This is not only jewellery a call for female power, freedom and equality. Through my works, Nüshu becomes a symbol to express people’s identity.”
