“what extent could a jewellery designer develop contemporary jewellery and its wearing method by the rapid development of digital and Internet technology?”
In an era of 2m social distancing the way we wear jewellery has changed. Zhu Tong has introduced the concept of atmosphere into her jewellery, Lonley Wanderer. Atmosphere enables wearer and viewer to deeply feel and convey certain emotions: a connection between the wearer and the viewer which can be seen, touched, interacted with, or felt. Even where no physical object is involved. Zhu conducted a variety of material tests exploring the materiality of mist, produced by electronic components, dyed by light and worn using digital technology.
Lonely Wanderer, uses two images – the moon and a cloud produced by mist to express the loneliness of a wanderer who cannot go home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are two components: the first part is physical, wearer’s mood shifting as the caress the uneven and bumpy enamelling. The second part combines AR technology to make a virtual structure and a mobile app.
