Etched hotel keycards which double as printing plates are one the unique features of The Printworks a hotel concept by Alysha Harvey which explores how graphic design can be applied in unique ways to enhance the hospitality sector. Working in collaboration with Coralie Wells, the concept fuses digital and print elements. Inspired by Sheffield – the steel city – the hotel feature stainless steel ‘Please Do Not Disturb’ signs with unique etchings of the building on which also double up as a printing tool. The celebration of printing also allows a more sustainable approach – hand printed linocut wallpaper is used in the bedrooms which also gives a more authentic and textured premium feel.
Harvey is a designer with a passion for printmaking, especially traditional methods such as lino printing and mono printing . She enjoys adapting her designs to suit other applications like fashion and interior and is fascinated by how design is used in many different aspects of life, for example the power that design has when tackling different political issues, something she has explored recently.
