Moving Kiruna tells the story of the Swedish town of Kiruna, built on an active iron ore mine which caused the ground beneath to deform and sink. As the mine was the main employer of the town and one of the world’s largest iron ore exporters, closing the mine was not an option. The Kiruna people had no choice, and were forced to undergo a huge relocation project to a new town two kilometres away.
Illustrated by Evie Pernet and written by Evie and Jane Pernet, the book tells the story of a community of people who left behind the homes they loved to begin life again. The true story of Moving Kiruna is inspired by the human capacity to embrace change, move forward and gently let go of the past.
