Aster Planetes: A Wandering Star

Charlotte Tait’s graduate collection was informed by her experience of her grandmother’s dementia, where every-day tasks from like getting dressed or going for walk are fraught with difficulty. Taking a day in her grandmother’s life she explores the sense of freedom this might paradoxically bring: deconstructing, simplifying garments and accepting a different way of wearing your clothes. The title, Aster Planetes, means ‘a wandering star’.

Her diffusion line is a vibrant cycling sportswear collection: a memory of time – light-hearted summer days as captured in a typical British photo album.

Tait’s speciality is in pattern cutting and design and her skills range from technical garment construction and hand finishing/sampling to communication skills in mood/story board creations, research, fabric sourcing, and product design development and illustration.
She worked in Knitwear and Jersey at French Connection in London during her placement year.

The Jig of Life
A day in the life of Tait's grandmother, following her difficulty in completing everyday tasks "The aim being to create a manipulation of reality by deconstructing, simplifying garments and to create a sense of freedom."
Aster Planetes
Collection concept- "Clothing is a way in which we define who we are and allows us to reveal our individuality to one another. If you are no longer able to express yourself in the clothes you wear because you have forgotten what you like, and how you want to wear it, it is akin to losing a bit of your own identity. "
