Earth After Life is a project by Naomi Ashcroft inspired by Alan Weisman’s book A World Without Us and the photography of David McMillan, who has spent 20 years documenting the decay of the abandoned city of Chernobyl. Ashcroft’s project was developed and aimed to reimagine what the city of Sheffield would look like if all humans suddenly disappeared as a of result of climate change. This building was chosen due to it’s architectural importance and history. Residents who have lived in Sheffield for years would recognise Abbeydale Picture House, but the establishment is not necessarily listed on tourist guides. The Abbeydale Picture House has been through numerous phases since it first opened it’s doors in 1920 as a theatre. It is well loved by locals and in 2003 The Friends of Abbeydale Picture House was formed to protect the historic building, and restore it back to the lively venue it once was.
