This reminds Chen of her student days, when heavy textbooks and lots of exam papers were printed with dense questions and dazzling text. The whiteness of the paper and the blackness of the text was numbing and tiresome. It is this remembered impression that inspires the overall colour palette of black and white and the dazzling style of the shapes in the work.

The artwork itself was inspired by the author's own process of growing tulips, from the initial seeds to the germination of the leaves, to the nurturing of the buds and finally to their blooming in a variety of different colours and shapes. These five key states are documented in photographs and reflected in the artwork.

The stage of ‘life’ is without a director who requires us to perform our roles perfectly. We constantly change our roles in response to environment and location changes. For example, Xinyi Chen changes based on her role in life as a student, or as a daughter, as a friend, as a partner, as a female, as a consumer, as a young person. Over a lifetime of switching between different roles, Chen is constantly becoming ‘her true self’.
