‘Be More Fluid’ by Kim Meldrum explores gender fluidity and the freedom associated with expressing yourself freely. This concept hopes to inspire and radiate positive energy when it comes to ‘gender’ and who we are – traditional categories shouldn’t separate us or tell us who to be. We all have the right and privilege to express ourselves freely – this is what ‘Be More Fluid’ is encompassing. It goes hand in hand with the dissertation question that explores ‘To what extent does fast fashion support and promote gender fluidity?’.
‘Expression’ demonstrates authenticity and fun surrounding identity. We are all individuals and we should celebrate and cherish that concept through love and admiration. The colour theme represents positivity and boldness in the sense of having the courage and being who you want to be. The casual aura depicts a sense of happiness and pride, creating a sense of community.
‘Be More Fluid’ relates to the freedom within gender and identity, the desire to express ourselves freely without judgement and to support others within the fluid community. Gender norms should not be holding us back and these boundaries should be pushed and disregarded. It celebrates individuality unanimously with a sense of admiration and acceptance.
‘Society Mask’ relates to the sad fact that not everyone is fully accepting of gender fluidity and these communities. This creates a mask where some individuals feel they can not fully express themselves and tell their stories due to fears of discrimination and judgement. This also focuses on movements made in the fast fashion industry relating to gender and inclusivity – ‘unisex’ collections formed of basic oversized pieces are not sufficient enough to cater for the gender fluid community. We need to encourage the element of further research and deeper forms of inclusivity.
