Beyond The Mirror is a thought-provoking project to raise awareness about body dysmorphia. In the fashion industry, where beauty standards are a prevalent issue, this project delves deep into the topic of body dysmorphia, striving to bring together a community of empowering creatives and spread body positivity. Stemming from her critical research project on the influences of social and traditional media on body dysmorphia in the fashion industry, the final project was profoundly inspired by her findings and personal mental health journey.
Concannon found inspiration in body-positive influencers, stylists, and artists such as Nelly London, Michaela Stark, and Sinead O’Dwyer. Their work catalysed her project, providing a framework to address the complexities of body image in the fashion world.
Her final projects included organising an event to raise awareness and funds for the Body Dysmorphia Disorder Foundation. The event became a platform that united a community of creatives and encouraged artistic expression through painting, promoting dialogue and understanding. Additionally, she created three powerful photoshoots: ‘Society’s Ties’, ‘A Love Letter To Your Body’, and ‘Fragile’. These photoshoots visually portrayed the journey of dysmorphia in a profound and aesthetically compelling manner, aiming to evoke empathy and understanding. Each photoshoot served as a narrative, shedding light on the struggles faced by individuals with dysmorphia, while simultaneously advocating for body acceptance and appreciation.
