The culture Ryan Wegg chose to focus on is the LGBTQ+ community in Sheffield and its day and nightlife scene. As a gay man living in the city, Wegg does not feel represented due to Sheffield’s lack of LGBTQ+ spaces. It is also well known that the main two LGBTQ+ bars in town, Dempsey’s and Queer Junction, have a lot of reported crime in the area. Consequently, the council has been talking about shutting them both down in recent months which would lead to Sheffield having practically no spaces for the community. Many people, including Wegg, both in and out of the community have said that they feel disappointed with how the bars show and represent LGBTQ+ spaces. Especially compared to other cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham, Sheffield is very lacking for LGBTQ+ people.

Also for Wegg personally, the history of the LGBTQ+ community and its people is extremely important as it is so diverse, and many key parts have vastly influenced culture today. Much of this history is also widely known and documented, apart from the 1950s to 1960s onwards after the civil rights movement, Therefore, Wegg wanted to highlight and express the people and actions which allowed us to get to this point.
