This concept represents the contentment of reaching your true identity. Taking inspiration from key theorists to show how once we become aware of the performativity of gender and how society has warped our gendered expectations we can become our true authentic selves by breaking free of these norms.
This project was inspired by Imogen Wilkinson‘s dissertation that analysed the possibility of a genderless fashion future. As she continued to delve into the complexities of gender theories, Wilkinson became fascinated with the work of key theorists such as Butler, West, and Zimmerman and the post-structuralist feminist approach of gender as a social construct.
A reflection of these gender theories coupled with the work of surrealist photographer Claude Cahun inspired her to create a collection of images that played upon gender stereotypes to create a rebellious, playful and performative style. This collection of images titled Dysphoria aims to portray the journey of breaking out of societies gendered expectations. These images visually showcase three key emotions: rebellion, confusion, and finally contentment.
The journey of these images hopes to evoke conversations among peers, communities, families and the wider audience to unmask the societal construction of gender and create a space where individuals can express themselves freely and without fear of judgment. This collection of images aim to challenge perceptions of gender in a step towards inclusivity of all gender variance.
