Giving A Voice to the ‘Voiceless’ shares the voices and perspectives of people of colour and creates an awareness of their lived experiences. Through expressing the beauty of black culture and creativity through our similar realities, Demi Holmes shares the sense of community among people of colour but also inviting white individuals to join and celebrate this movement.

A photoshoot and a three-part zine series have been created to share this message and take a step forward in un white-washing the media. The photoshoot concept presents the everyday lives of people of colour working and living in Brixton.

black creativity +

This zine focuses on creating a platform for the work of young black creatives by telling the story of six individuals. The creatives have shared their experiences in art, fashion, music, photography and poetry. Whilst also sharing the platforms of these creatives that are currently showing innovation. 

black reality +

This zine focuses on the everyday aspects of black culture. Particularly looking at the accounts surrounding the home, family life, growing up in a Jamaican home, food, and black cultural celebration events such as Nottinghill Carnival. This is shown through essays, poetry and through the voices of six different people of colour.

black beauty +

This zine focuses on the complexities and beauty of black hair. The stories from six individuals will share their hair journey and how the European beauty standard has impacted people of colour. The history and importance of black hair have also been told to educate and inform. Along with this, Holmes’ own personal story is included to act as a symbolic way of emancipating herself from the previous negativity faced with her hair and how she has overcome this.
