Margins of Extinction
Margins of Extinction is a response to the trauma of climate change. In contrast to traditional landscapes depicting humanity’s serene coexistence with nature, Margins of Extinction shows a series of ‘wastescapes’ which register the sublimely abject aftermath of the ongoing destruction of the natural environment. These works bring together semi-abstract images of vast industrial quarries and mines located in the Peak District and North Wales with painted marks resonant of the primal traces of early human interaction with the land. Using processes of creation, destruction, and reconstruction they form a set of palimpsests symbolising the land’s disfigurement and erasure by contemporary humanity.
