Reading The Room
‘It is possible that the domestic interior can tell us more about a person than a traditional portrait. The interior acts as a museum, representing one’s individuality, mode of living and most importantly, their mindset. Within photographic practice, this has frequently been represented in stereotypical fashions.
Reading The Room explores the idea that looking at a person’s home environment through the genre of still life, can develop understanding of their mental state, how this influences their environment, and vice versa. Drawing on qualities of pictorialism, and using narrative devices, this work invites you to question what can be understood about people through the domestic setting and consider what aspects of everyday life are typically ignored or disregarded as mundane and insignificant.
