Woolwell – Interchangeable Utensils

This product is a design solution responding to the following brief. “Produce a system of food preparation tools that have been designed inclusively, to make a user’s experience much more efficient and convenient, and to encourage experimentation resulting in improved confidence towards the activity.” The idea was that students and young adults often struggle with the responsibility of cooking their meals for the first time resulting in poor confidence from lack of experience. Many people within this target market live in shared accommodation or smaller homes like flats and studio apartments meaning that storage and counter space are scarce. This can also impact a person’s ability to experiment in the kitchen as they may have limited tools, utensils and kitchen items due to the lack of space to keep them. Throughout the whole project, the focus was entirely centred on user needs and developing the concept into a practical, considerate design. The outcome was an ergonomic handle and interchangeable utensil heads with a custom locking system. Each part went through testing and development. The locking system, in particular, was changed and improved several times throughout the design process to ensure an entirely feasible result. Each feature was created with a purpose; no decisions were made without careful reflection and reasoning. The outcome was received well by the intended target market.
