“Threading Through” is a monochromatic autobiographical project by Brooke that visualises the lived realities of the female experience, focusing on the effects of domestic violence through diverse bodyscape photography.
These images were created in a safe studio space using a DSLR camera with diverse women, including women of a different race and age, to re-enact the emotional turmoil through body language, composition and negative space. This reflects the emptiness and silence surrounding domestic abuse and the mental health struggles that affect female survivors. It invites viewers into a space of reflection, encouraging an intimate discussion about experiences that are often marginalised and silenced. The desideration for escapism is pursued through a visual language that integrates yarn physically and metaphorically. ‘Threading Through’ incorporates mixed media by using digital art and materials such as white yarn to echo how trauma can be both internalised and externalised. Yarn has become a symbol of sensuality and vulnerability, as well as showing the juxtaposition of control and healing. ‘Threading Through’ aims to navigate these sensitive themes through empathy and collective understanding, and a way to offer a quiet but powerful sense of hope.
