A Northern Soul is an ongoing project that allows for me to reflect on my family, upbringing, and the culture and references I am surround by. This piece, is a mosaic, showing an image of The Barnsley Women Against Pit Closures (WAPC). It is made up of 816 beer mats, 34 wide and 24 high, and around 3m wide, and 2.2 metres high. Made up from beer mats collected from several pubs in Sheffield, categorised and inventoried to create this mosaic. It aims to represent the WAPC support groups communal efforts in keeping mining towns stable throughout the strikes of 1984-85, by personifying the subjects through a symbol of beer mats, something relative to Miner’s Welfare Clubs, and Working Men’s Clubs around the country. Rallies in Barnsley, 1984, consisted of 5000 women from around the country to support political oppression against their families, and their efforts to keep communities alive is something that should never be forgotten.
