In this project, Mary Farrall explores how the narrative of materials and objects can be disrupted through sculpture. To do this, she utilises the historical, social, political and personal connections a viewer may experience when encountering recognisable items. Drawing from these associations, she creates juxtaposing pairings or physical manipulations to distort the relationships between the objects, and between object and viewer. Within this research, Mary found that people often have sentimental attachments to objects that allow them to provoke memories and narratives. By using recognisable objects, the viewer is encouraged to allow their subconscious connotations to read the work.
