Homosexuality and personal experience of homophobia are the key concerns of Harry Nixon-Kneale. His painting Date Night, is the final piece in a triptych, depicting him and his boyfriend moments before an immanent attack, inspired by real events.

Nixon-Kneale works primarily in oil paints to create portraits, often inspired by news articles in which the LGBT+ community have been persecuted. The paintings always feature the motif of a self -portrait, and recently have included an appearance of one of his loved ones- his mother and his boyfriend in often life-or-death scenarios; playing with the idea of an out of body experience.

Nixon-Kneale is a queer artist based in Sheffield and Liverpool. He describes his as “fictionally non-fiction” drawing on real life events, seldom receiving news media attention

“I have experienced homophobia and witness others experiencing the same. It left me feeling frustrated that these events weren’t getting any media coverage so I decided to paint the situations to highlight the heinous attacks”.
