Emily Reading’s installation transforms six window panes into a staged shop front, using the language of retail display to interrogate themes of glamour, aspiration, and consumerism. The work features four digital prints on translucent flag fabric, allowing light to pass through and mimic the look of commercial signage or high street advertising. Alongside these, screen prints fill the two main panes, functioning as physical collages, layering texture and imagery to echo luxury fashion editorials. The imagery includes cut-up collages and Aldi “dupes” of high-end perfumes, juxtaposing affordability with aspiration. By placing mass-market imitations in a high-fashion visual context, the work critiques the seductive illusion of luxury and how it is repackaged for mass consumption. Viewed from the outside, the window-pane format draws on the aesthetics of display and desire, inviting the viewer to reflect on what we consume, and why.
