Growing pain is a project that has been made to explore life from childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood. This catalogue of poems has been created to take you on a journey through some of the emotions that were present at the most pivotal moment . It touches on moments in my life where the optimism for the future wasn’t present in my life, and parts that have. I explored how it feels to feel the need to hide who I am from those around me, and I laid out my feelings of instability surrounding the concept of home. In conjunction with the poems are the visual responses, where I have been exploring the relationship between materiality and trauma as well as how different types of display impact the art I have made. With the paintings and poems in conversation, I wanted childlike wonder to contrast with the heavy words in everything that I am presenting. Within my work I have been contemplating on how my responses are compelling through materiality and display. I have taken inspiration from the likes of Do Ho Suh and Kelly Gallagher, to build a foundation to my work rooted in memory and nostalgia. I stuck to rudimentary materials, such as ink, newspaper print and glitter as a connection to the whimsy that I feel is lacking in day to day life, as well as in effort to make my art as accessible as possible to reflect the abilities of a young, beginner artist.
