Katie Garner manipulates the body in her work

“by taking something natural such as the human body and adding or manipulating its landscape or true form I am reclaiming power. I document the human form, but also create a completely new being”.

Materials and objects are abstracted highlighting a strange viscerality

“I am looking for shapes and surfaces that evoke a human fleshy feeling. Drawing myself towards curves and soft, round objects as you associate then with the touch of the body and the sensations you feel”.

Her photographic images act as both documentation of human interaction with her sculptural pieces, and evidence of her personal vulnerability and exposure.

Born in North Yorkshire, with a father who is a practising painter, Garner grew up around art and has interests in ceramics and sculpture. Originally moving to Sheffield to study Jewellery and Metalwork, she discovered a passion for creating larger sculpture and using soft materials and transferred to Fine Art, where she has been able to explore social issues such as body image and gender dysphoria.
