In this project, Pippa Strang created an all encompassing environment, carefully developed and curated to help create an emotional impact on those who enter. Strang’s work was intended to establish a connection between the art and those who view it, allowing anyone to create their own narrative and story behind it by using powerful and gruesome paintings to make an impact. Strang used canvas paper in order to make the space more immersive, as the paintings are cut to the shapes of the subjects which creates the illusion that the animals are really there. She also painted the walls a dark bloody red in order to stray from the conventional art gallery norms of using a white wall, and also to add that extra level of captivation and violence. Her work is all about the viewer, as without a clear narrative behind her work it forces outsiders to create their own story and connect in their own way. She wanted to create paintings of beloved prey animals like deer, foxes, rabbits and badgers as they are mostly associated with happiness and joy, and showing them in a grotesque state is not only a shock factor, but people often view the work a a metaphor, and it allows onlookers to look within themselves and view her art using their own experiences as a stepping stone for making up their own version of its meaning.
